THEATRE: I took Kirk to his first play this weekend--Jack and the Beanstalk. He loved it. They had an ASL interpreter there, in a costume and right in the midst of the play, sometimes even interacting with the characters. I told Kirk how he used to "speak" sign language when he was a baby, and showed him some of the signs he'd learned. He couldn't wrap his mind around it.
BAWLING: Saturday I ran across a Breast Cancer walk unexpectedly and burst into tears because there were just so many people walking and it made me feel so hopeful and grateful.
AW, SPECIAL FEELINGS: Saturday night I stayed up late talking to my wonderful, intelligent husband about politics and the arts and voluntarism and the state of the world and all sorts of good stuff. I hadn't realized how long it had been since we talked like that. The problem with him working from home, and being paid hourly, that he tends to spend a lot of time in front of his computer. Our tendency to choose movies as our escape on nights when we have a babysitter doesn't help our chance for conversation. I've got to work on this.
KARATE: I think Kirk is going to be promoted to a yellow belt next week. I really like their way of doing things--among the requirements are that Kirk's Montessori teachers sign a form saying he's been respectful and self-disciplined at school. They were learning how to no-touch spar this week--I nearly bit my cheek in half trying not to laugh watching Kirk and his equally young-and-clueless partner going through the motions. They weren't even looking at each other. They were watching the other kids and just kicking randomly and crazily.
