Last night I washed a lot of unmentionables and long underwear and used Woolite. Every time I get a whiff of that stuff, I feel like ZsaZsa Gabor.
I grew up with in a tight-budget household, raised by a mom who was very practical. If a clothing item needed special care, we didn't own it. No dry cleaning, no handwashing, and for heaven's sake no special detergent. Even "lingerie" (what there was of it) had to fend for itself among the other laundry. If it couldn't hack it, it didn't deserve to stay in the wardrobe. All this to say, I grew up thinking of "Woolite" as a fairly exotic commodity. I'd see the ads and marvel at those women with all those "fine washables." Wow! Imagine living like that!
When I got to college my roommate--a mere 18 year old girl, mind you!--had amidst her laundry supplies a bottle of Woolite. She used it! Regularly! She seemed pretty sophisticated and urbane to me.
Well, you can take the girl out of the hicks but you can't take the hick out of the girl....the smell of Woolite still gives me a little thrill. It shouldn't be such a big deal now; while I still lean towards the practical I do own clothes that need hand washing, and I've regularly owned and used Woolite for years. But still, just the smell gives me a little kick. Fiiiiiiine Living!
