My Michigan-themed book club selections
Jan. 28th, 2011 10:01 amWe just finished and discussed "Rivethead" by Ben Hamper (author wrote about working for GM in Flint). Interesting book but not particularly well-liked by the group. Several people have personal ties to the auto industry (both blue- and white-collar) so that made for some interesting discussion.
We're next reading ‘In A Perfect World’ by Laura Kasischke (author teaches as U-M)
Then we're reading Q Road by Bonnie Jo Hagerty (author lives in MI, book takes place there)
We used to alternate between fiction and non-fiction, but our list of potential books is very skewed toward fiction so every now and again we read two fiction in a row.
And as baseball season opens, we will be reading "The Final Season- Fathers, Sons and One Last Season in a Classic American Ballpark" by Tom Stanton (which is about Tiger Stadium, so duh)
I was in the mood to read something cheerful, but every single book on our list had words like "Harrowing" "Somber" "Despair" "Struggle" etc in the synopses. I guess people in Michigan are incapable of writing upbeat works.
