I say this from everyone in my office, who are utterly unable to be happy for our Provost because WE DO NOT WANT TO GIVE HIM UP.

Phil is my boss' boss' boss. Used to be my boss' boss until he was promoted to Provost. WE LOVE HIM, so fuck Dartmouth. I also partly blame Phil's love of skiing.

None of us knew anything until the email hit our inboxes at the same moment, whereupon we all gathering in a grumpy group in the hall to frown at each other and gnash our teeth.

Dartmouth stole James O. Freedman from us in the 1980s, and of course you losers stole Mary Sue Coleman from us a few years back.

In your case, you can at least know that Hanlon was making a vertical move to become president at Dartmouth. In our case, we apparently aren't good enough for the cool admin kids.

Honestly, that's the problem with being a Big Ten school; you end up being a place that other schools look to when they want to snatch up a skillful administrator. Big Ten schools are large enough that admins are broadly prepared; academic enough to be respectable, etc.
