Praise the gods, this upcoming weekend my husband and I are going away together. Just for a weekend, but I'm thrilled. Kirk is going to his grandparents' house, and we are going to Washington, DC, one of our favorite places to go.

We're thinking of splitting up on at least one day to see different sites, because he's going to want to spend more time looking at art than I am.

You know what I am looking foward to? Walking onto the plane with just my own bag. And sitting there and reading a book--a grownup book, no dinosaurs or potty chairs or sneetches or green eggs and ham--for the duration of the flight. No juggling cheerios and juice cups and coloring books and the laptop and matchbox cars. No trying to keep the kid happy, distracted, seated, buckled, and quiet for the flight. Just taking care of myself.

I am not renting a car, but if you (and any other Dopers) would like to take the train it to meet me at some place that is mutually easy to get to, I'd love to have lunch or dinner. I'd even buy your meal in honor of your birthday.

That's so nice! I would love to see you, I need to hear from Emma first to see if she's going to make the trip down. Bitch bitch bitch. I'd rather hang out with you, and bring you some Maryland Poison Bloodgrass.

No...dinosaurs? Why? Truly, what good is life if there are no dinosaurs?

Washington! My town! Have a great time and ride the Metro for me!

Eat lunch at La Prima! Check out the Rocks, Stones, and Dinosaur Bones Musuem (aka, National Museum of Natural History)! Take a self-guided tour of Michael's Old Offices.

Most important: Have fun!

Say hi to my cousin, Kevin Abbott at the American History Museum. He does hands on science exhibits. Stuff with bucky balls and such. :)

Me too, no husband either. I even commandeered some of Mark's frequent flier miles and got myself a first class ticket. This is the first time I've done this and while I feel a little guilty, I know I'm going to be smiling all damn weekend!

Have fun in DC!!

Off topic, but can you explain how frequent flier mileage works? I signed up for Northwest Airlines World Perks and they gave me 1000 frequent flier miles. Do I actually get 1000 miles of free travel? Do I have to accumulate x-amount of miles before I can cash them in? How does it work?!?!? Reading the FAQ on their site doesn't help to answer my questions at all.

Er, I don't know how Northworst's program works but I assume it's similar to American's and Delta's.

Generally, you look on the back of your statement and it will tell you what awards you get for how much mileage. Usually it's around 20,000 miles for a coach flight in the continental US, 40,000 for first class, 10,000 for an upgrade, etc. There are only a certain amount of seats on each flight that are available to people flying on award travel and there are usually a buttload of blackout dates. American and Delta both have a thing where you can use double the miles and it gets rid of blackout dates and the seat restriction thing.

I went to NWA.com and you're right, it's really confusing. I managed to find out that a round trip coach flight in the continental US is 25,000 miles. Also, NWA is in cahoots with a bunch of other airlines, car rental people and hotels so you can get miles by doing stuff like that too. I'd bet that they also have a credit card where you can earn a mile for every dollar spent too.

I'd wait for your statements, they're usually a lot less confusing.

Have a great time!

I blame myself for the dinosaurs.

That sounds great. I mean, not that I can really relate, except I know how nice it is just to get away from the dawg sometimes. And cleaning out the cat's litter box. Feeding them twice a day.

This is coming out all wrong. :D

Have fun!

It must be hard to be a mom. The whole Cranky family is going to have a good time, though. Yay for kids at grandparents' houses!
