There were little notices up at daycare that there is a "Parent's Afternoon Off" and a "Parent's Night Out" available this weekend. Apparently, two teachers will agree to open the center for four hours, and you can bring your kid in. You pay the teacher directly, a set rate. It's a win-win because teachers get to make some extra money, and the daycare center gets credit for offering really cool services. What genius thought this up? I applaud them! They have one for Friday night and one for Saturday afternoon. We're all over the Saturday one. It's only $27 for 4 hours, which is way cheaper than hiring a sitter.

Kirk had his six-month checkup this morning. His dentist was stunned that he had two cavities that were not there six months ago. They're going to need CROWNS. We're doing everything right in terms of home dental care, and still this happens. It's going to be a battle for the next 12 or more years to keep those teeth healthy. ARGH. We're so frustrated. Let's hope his permanent teeth have decent enamel on them.

Christ it's hot. Maybe if we'd had some spring I could have eased into this heat. Ugh.

This week I put up my first strawberry jam. I feel so accomplished. I told Ruth, my partner in jamhood, that now I wanted the modern world to fall apart so my mad canning skillz would be legitimately useful.

Balloon festival this weekend, nearby. No, it isn't going to be like, say, Albuquerque, but it might keep the offspring entertained a bit.

My sister (12) had something done to her teeth when her permanents were newly in, some sort of protective coating. It didn't take long but it left a terrible taste in her mouth for a few days. I can't remember what the heck it was called but maybe you can ask your dentist about something like that for Kirk.

And I LOVE that idea about your daycare!

Yeah, it's sort of like teflon-coating your couch, or whatever it is that's called. And I had no idea they even made crowns for baby teeth!

I had the sealant put on Ethan's teeth last year and it seems to have worked. We had a good check up a couple of weeks back and apparently the coating is supposed to last for several years which is a blessing considering how expensive dentists can be.

What a great idea at the daycare, that's really cheap for 4 hours. Sounds to me like it should be a spoil yourself afternoon.

This is awful of me, but aren't crowns for baby teeth kind of a waste of money?

"Kid, you better learn to take care of your teeth, or we're gonna start pullin' em." ;)

And I would also like to see my mad canning skillz put to good use. Strawberry jam sounds lovely. I like making pear preserves the best.
