1. What's the last place you traveled to, outside your own home state/country?

Well, I was in Nebraska last week. Last out-of-country place was Jamaica. No, Canada--I forget about Canada because it's not like leaving the country.

2. What's the most bizarre/unusual thing that's ever happened to you while traveling?

Well, the following story sort of freaked me out: I went to Paris with a girlfriend, in January. Not a great time to go, certainly not popular with American tourists. Her dad picks us up at the airport and before taking us back to their apartment, suggests we walk around a bit in a lively neighborhood. We duck into a little brasserie off the beaten path and I'll be goddamned if I don't run smack dab into someone I know. I mean, from the U.S. Right there in the same little unknown cafe in the middle of a huge city.

Later that week I ran into someone else I knew, at Versailles. That was a little less odd (I mean, everyone goes to Versailles) but still.

3. If you could take off to anywhere, money and time being no object, where would you go?

Under those circumstances, I think I'd like to go to Australia. The "money no object" thing is important, because I hear the flight is brutal so this is my chance to go first class. I decided this morning out of the blue I wanted to visit India, so let's put that on the list as well.

4. Do you prefer traveling by plane, train or car?

I like them each, for different things. I like the control and freedom of a car (no schedules) but going by plane or train is nice because travel time becomes reading time, or knitting time, or whatever. The train beats planes hands-down for this, since you're not being herded and crowded and barked at about putting your tray up, but if I have a long way to go the train seems time-prohibitive.

5. What's the next place on your list to visit?

As in a place I am actually going? Saugatuck, MI at the end of this month. New Jersey a month later. My husband and I are making some longer-term plans for visiting England, but we want to wait until Kirk is older. We probably won't take him along, but he needs to be older before he can handle that much of a separation.

Oooh.... we went to Saugatuck earlier this summer. It was nice, but a bit quiet. Regardless, I recommend.

Running into someone you know in some obscure other corner of the world isn't that uncommon. When I was living in London, a friend and I decided to go to the Tower on the 4th of July, and literally the first person I saw once we walked through the gates was another friend who'd been living in Germany for two years.

Later on that summer I decided to do the touristy thing and go watch the Changing of the Guard, and when that was over I schlepped off to Victoria tube station and when I was paying for my ticket up walked my brother's best friend.

And yet, in all the time I went in and out of O'Hare Airport over the course of six years, only once did I ever see anyone I knew.

Should go without saying, but you're more than welcome to crash here if you come to Ireland. We live in an amazingly beautiful area of the country.

We even have a spare bedroom, as long as you don't object to kids. Bring Kirk! It'll be FUN!! Horseriding on the beach, hiking, all sorts.
