Funny isn't always funny

I was at a conference last week, and was treated to the non-strop comedic stylings of a colleague from the western part of this fair state. We're talking about things like revival-preacher impressions, goofy behavior, weak puns, and outbursts of song lyrics. It was constant, unrelenting, interruptive, and just not that funny.

And so many of my other colleagues were just charmed to death by this guy. "Oh, he's such a hoot!" No. No, he's not. In fact, I'd strongly advocate that he needs to be shot. What was so irritating was not just that his humor wasn't the kind that generally appeals to me--it was that he unleashed it with a kind of bravado that said "I am the funniest person in this room! It is up to me to bring a light-hearted flair to this gathering! And I'm so damned amusing, it doesn't matter if I interrrupt people, derail conversation, or steal the spotlight."

I just wanted to know where his "off" switch is. I had only one inkling that anyone else found him as tiresome as I did.

There is an off switch. Unfortunately it's between C2 and C3, which is difficult to get to without a bone saw. With a little perseverance, you'll get there.

So, you finally met Scylla?

HA! I was going to say (and I guess I still will), "Who invited Zenster?"

Heh. That's exactly what I was thinking.

I would have backed a truck over him. He sounds AWFUL.

It's a funny thing: it's okay if a strong person knows he's strong, or if a good painter knows he's a good painter.

But if someone knows he's funny, suddenly he's not funny. Or he never was. Or anyway, funny people rarely let on that they're funny.
