I didn't get it either. But I sent the "headline" to a friend of mine who is a major baseball fanatic telling him I knew he'd find it amusing even if I didn't entirely get it. This was his explanation:
A "tainted" record is one that's listed in the official MLB record books, but it has an * next to it. The only one I know of is Roger Maris' (Yankees) 1961 record of 61 HRs in one season. Babe Ruth had the original mark of 60, but he did it during a 154-game schedule. Maris played when the schedule was 162 games like today, and he hit #61 (I think) in the last game of the year. So, he set a new single-season mark but it took him more games, hence the *. Most people have always regarded that as bullshit, but what can you do.
Bonds, asshole that he is, should get an * when he moves into 2nd place, because it's a tainted number, and worse than what they originally thought Maris' was. Since he's such an asshole, this:
MLB To Place Asterisk, Pound Sign, Exclamation Point, Letter 'F' Next To Bonds' Name
Hey, you.... do you know if we can use an ATM as a "currency exchange?" I mean, I know there will be a fee, but can I put in my ATM card from an American bank and get Canadian $$ dispensed on my account?
Canoeing in the marshes is really, really fun. What's cool is to go all the way across the marsh, to the other side, where the other beach is. Kinda neat over there- esp. if you bring a lunch.
We've only been canoeing once but it was great. That was on the Huron, and I hated having to portage the Canoe over Argo dam. The rest was loads of fun, however.
I heard some fans in a rival city were encouraged to bring Sharpies to the stadium, so if Bonds hit #715, they could write "CHEATER" on it and throw it back.
I found that notion hysterical. The ball would belong in the Hall of Fame Museum, but it would have "CHEATER" scrawled on it.
