I occasionally write about nice things.

On Tuesday, we got to talking about campuses who had endured some hardships, like UT-Brownsville (Dolly whipped through) and of course, U of Iowa. The Provost related that she heard from her Iowa colleagues that after the call for more sandbagging volunteers went out, among the folk who showed up were the Amish. Now how cool is that? They don't participate in higher education at all (they stop attending school after 8th grade), yet they show up to help save a campus. It warms the cockles of my shriveled heart, it really does.

I'm not sure if they were completely excused from assignments during that time or just given extra time to catch up, but I was impressed by the U's flexibility and the instructors' support.
