At what point will we elect a president who does not use un-words like "gonna" in public speech? It drove me BONKERS about President Bush and to hear Obama do it makes me feel DESPAIR.

...to hear Obama do it makes me feel DESPAIR.

Irregardless, me and you ain't gonna go regretin' that he's act'shully speachable!

Hey, this is funny: I just looked up "gonna" on the OED online, and "gonna" is actually in the dictionary:
colloq. (esp. U.S.) or vulgar pronunciation of going to (see GO v. 47b).
[Cf. the earlier Sc. ganna, gaunna: see Eng. Dial. Dict. s.v. Go, quots. 1806, etc.]

The point being that I just learned some new things: what a colloquial word is (I googled for the definition rather than look it up on the OED, 'cos I'm a 'tard, apparently); that being in the dictionary doesn't make a word proper, as in "formal or elevated language"; and that I really, really love my subscription to the OED online.

But at least he hasn't said "misunderestimating" yet!

So nice to have a president who's not talking around a cowboy boot all the time.

Ever since Sarah Palin came on the scene, I have forceably stopped myself from ever saying 'gonna'. I think I used to do it all the time, and hearing her made my ears bleed. It's like seeing how other people look when they chew gum in meetings or out in public and realizing that they look like cows chewing cud. Cured me of chewing gum in public very quickly, I tell you.

I don't care about "gonna" in casual speech--it's just that when there is a microphone in front of someone, I expect them to speak with a little more formality.

Actually, that's a good way of putting it, and I agree.

Meh, I can understand the frustration - I have the same response whenever I hear uptalking or someone uses the word like in place of a comma. However, I think his use of "gonna" may be somewhat intentional so people feel connected with him -- "... hey, he sometimes talks as bad as me"

Now, if he starts clearing brush wearing a cowboy hat while the press watches, THEN I'll chart a course to Canada.
