I haven't posted about the tsunami thing because, well, damn.

ETA: People on west coast getting swept out to sea after ignoring warnings? I think I woulda just let them go.

Right? What can you really say about something that involves nuclear meltdowns and tides of bodies? Me personally, I can't say anything that a reputable news agency wouldn't say better.

I feel the same way. I have nothing to add - it's overwhelming, so sad.

This is a really good source of news about it - it's a feed of personal accounts by Japanese bloggers (in English). Cuts through the newsspeak and into people's hearts and minds. More intense, but worth the read, and I feel like my small Red Cross donation is more connected somehow after reading.

Yeah, I feel like there's just no point. It affects me in my day to day life not at all, which is sort of sad on its own, but what is there to say? It's heartbreaking to watch when all you can do is watch and hope next time, it's not your ticket getting punched.

I immediately wondered about U-M students there, or students from Japan studying here. And my son's Japanese teacher and whether they'd be taking the annual trip in April. I felt a little sheepish about caring more about the people with a connection to me (professional or personal) but I think it's normal to want to do that. It's like when a plane crashes--they rish to find out if there are local victims, and if so that's how they spin every story going forward. Otherwise it's pretty abstract. Not that abstract doesn't have its advantages.

It's all just too horrible to watch, and to think, out of every country out there, they were the most able to deal with an earthquake of that magnitude.

Exactly. Had that happened in Haiti, it would have ended the country.

What the hell are you really going to say, anyway? I only mentioned it on Friday because I actually know a dude who lives in Tokyo. But even his trials (no food at the stores, his business is closed) are NOTHING compared to the actual shit going down over there. Unimaginable.

It's shocking to everyone else, too. Don't feel bad.
