She always complained she was just another "Oh, no, save me Doctor!" companion, but everyone else remembers her as the the first brassy, modern woman on the show. She broke some serious TV ground with that character.
Oh, she was in the 70's, too, except the writers didn't know what the hell to do with her, so they often did end up putting her in precarious situations the Doctor would have to rescue her from. Thing is, SHE is the one that turned the character into something a LOT more than how she was written, and she did it beautifully. A lot of British women our age will tell you she was an inspiration to them (I suppose the U.S. equivalent would be like Charlie's Angels or The Bionic Woman or something similar).
